About the Romanian language

Romanian is the national language of Romania, where it is spoken by around 17 million people. It is also spoken in Moldova where it is referred to as Moldovan. In total, around 24 million people worldwide speak Romanian as a first language.

Descended from Latin introduced during the Roman occupation in the 2nd century AD, it is classified as an Eastern Romance language. It switched from the Roman to the Cyrillic alphabet in 1860. Over the centuries it has borrowed extensively from other Slavic languages, Greek, Turkish, German, and especially French, with approximately one third of its vocabulary being of French origin.
