About the Japanese language

Over 130 million people speak Japanese, most of whom live in Japan, with some in emigrant communities worldwide. Japanese is the official language of Japan.

It is a matter of debate whether it is related to any other known language, although the writing system has used Chinese ideographic characters, kanji, for almost 2000 years. These are supplemented by two types of syllabic characters, hiragana and katakana, both of which were developed from kanji.
