Serbian is the principal language of Serbia. It is spoken by around 9 million people and is written in a modified form of the Cyrillic alphabet, but the majority of Serbs know the Roman alphabet as well. It is essentially the same language as Croatian with some differences in vocabulary and is a member of the Slavic group of Indo-European languages.

Serbia is a mountainous country and tourism mainly focuses on its mountain villages, numerous spa resorts, and monasteries, although the capital Belgrade and the Danube are also very popular. A knowledge of Serbian will make your visit more enjoyable and as an added benefit you will also be understood in Croatia and Bosnia.
